CASE STUDIES — Environmental Compliance: WEEE

Our client is one of the largest interconnect manufacturing company in the Midwest. They are considered an industry leader and manufacture products at several facilities, each operating as a discrete business unit. As a responsible steward of our environment, they realized  that corporate wide policies and procedures would be needed to define and manage the requirements of the RoHS-WEEE-ELV directives, while communicating across a broad spectrum of disciplines to minimize confusion during compliance implementation. To accomplish this, a unified compliance team would be needed to work with the staff at each facility to insure that all product families and facility operations were addressed. The company had launched a RoHS compliance initiative earlier that year and realized that WEEE compliance had become bogged down in the details.

IST’s environmental compliance team was able to break the log jam. We were contracted to  work as part of their corporate wide compliance team to create all documentation of their product families material content beyond the six (6) RoHS substances for the purpose of assisting waste recyclers with recycling disparate components. Under the WEEE Directive, manufacturers of certain electronic equipment must ensure that documentation exists to provide for the recovery and re-use of separately collected waste electrical and electronic equipment, according to set recovery, re-use and recycling objectives.

Because of our intimate knowledge of the European Union WEEE Directive, we created documentation which enabled the company to declare a components total mass and weight, material composition and the percentage of each of the recyclable substances within the component, as well as the determination of  WEEE responsibility. Using the following Deliverables, our customer quickly registered their products for sale into the European Union.

  • Product Materials Mass Analysis
  • Product Materials Mass Analysis Document
  • Product Schematic, (substance and location identification)

Technical Skills

  • Intimate knowledge of the European Union RoHS-WEEE-ELV Directives
  • Intimate knowledge of electronic product design, equipment, and application engineering
  • Electro-mechanical engineering principles
  • Copper Alloy, non-Ferrous and Plastic materials composition & properties

ist gets it done!
